Scholar, teacher and author of “Discovering Buddhism in Everyday Life,”the Rev. Marvin Harada of Orange County and Buddhist Churches of America, will speak at Kamuela Hongwanji Mission at 7 p.m. today. He also will give a presentation at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Hilo Betsuin.

Sharing key points from a course he teaches for the Buddhist Education Center in Orange County, Harada will focus on issues large and small that affect everyone — life and death, relationships, work issues and self-esteem — with something of a practical Buddhist approach. While specific instructions might not be found within a Buddhist “textbook,” living with a foundation in the Dharma (“natural law,” which includes Buddhist teachings), can be an uplifting and liberating way to re-frame and overcome problems.

Harada is well-known as an engaging speaker, which explains in part why his temple’s membership is among the most flourishing in North America.

Minister of the Orange County Buddhist Temple since 1986, Harada is also co-director for the Center for Buddhist Education for the Buddhist Churches of America. He has academic degrees in religious studies and Buddhist studies from the University of Oregon and Institute of Buddhist Studies, and has studied at the Buddhist Temple of Chicago, Chu-o-Bukkyo Gakuin and Ryokoku University in Japan.

Harada’s talks are free and open to everyone regardless of religious or spiritual background.
